Unitil Completes Acquisition of Two New Hampshire Water Firms
Unitil Corporation has finalized its purchase of two Aquarion water companies in New Hampshire, closing a deal first announced in May 2025.
Unitil Corporation (NYSE: UTL) closed its acquisition of two New Hampshire water utilities on June 30, 2026, the Hampton-based energy company announced Monday. The deal covers Aquarion Water Company of New Hampshire, Inc. and Abenaki Water Co., Inc., both purchased from the Aquarion Water Authority in a transaction that expands Unitil's footprint beyond its traditional electric and gas operations.
The Stock Purchase Agreement was originally disclosed on May 6, 2025, but was subsequently amended to narrow the scope of the deal, limiting Unitil's purchase exclusively to the two named New Hampshire companies rather than a broader set of assets. The revised terms still required regulatory sign-off from multiple state bodies before the transaction could proceed.

All closing conditions under the amended agreement were materially satisfied as of the transaction date, Unitil said, including receipt of approvals from both the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission and the Maine Public Utilities Commission. The dual-state regulatory clearance underscores the geographic reach of the utilities involved, even as the acquisition itself centers on New Hampshire water service.
The move signals a strategic pivot for Unitil, a company historically focused on regulated electric and natural gas distribution. Adding water utility assets diversifies its regulated revenue base and positions the company alongside larger multi-utility operators that have increasingly consolidated water infrastructure across the northeastern United States in recent years.
